Cincinnati: Spring Break Mission Trip

We’re excited to announce that for our 2012 spring break mission trip—March 17-24—we’ll be heading to Cincinnati, OH. Cincinnati is a city that has a lot of poverty as well as many other common urban issues. There will be great chances for us to serve the poor and minority communities.

What might we do?

Construction projects - such as painting, sheetrock, concrete work, yard clean-up, tree trimming, debris removal, etc.
Canvas neighborhoods & participate in prayer walks
Partner with local churches in need of manpower & enthusiasm
Random acts of God’s love (i.e., hot dog or bottled water giveaways)
Park ministry - play with kids and/or host events in local parks
Visit nursing/disabled home

We will be working with former Solid Rock youth volunteers Nathan & Kayla Traver. Nathan & Kayla work as youth ministers at Highview Christian Church. They are also on staff with the missions organization Team Expansion which has a team of workers in Cincinnati which they call Hope Inner City (http://www.hopeinnercity.org/).

Who can go? - This trip is designed for high school students. Please pray about the opportunity to go on this trip. Mission trips are different than other trips we take as a youth ministry. We consider it to be a commitment that you make. Yes, it’s fun and you will make tons of memories, but the focus is 100% on serving others. We’re not there for us. We’re there for God and the people we are serving.

How do I sign up? - If you and your parents decide to pursue this opportunity, download the permission form here, fill it out, and turn it in along with your $50 deposit to Josh Nelson by February 12th. After February 12th, you will be assessed a $25 late fee. Your deposit is non-refundable and reserves your spot on the trip.

How much does it cost? - The total cost for the trip will be $100 (you’ll pay an additional $50 after the deposit: $50 + $50 = $100! [total cost = $125 if signed up after Feb. 12th]). If writing a check, please make it out to UCC with “youth mission trip” in the memo line. In addition, you will also need to cover the cost of 6 fast food meals during travel. You’ll also be asked to make an investment of working during our annual Valentine Taste-Around dinner on the evening of February 12th. This fundraiser helps make your costs much less!

CIY Believe Conference - Middle School

Believe is an event just for you! February 17-18, we're going to a conference in St. Louis put on by Christ In Youth. This will be a weekend full of great music, videos, activities, hanging out with your friends, and learning more about Jesus. We'll leave Friday, Feb. 17th at noon and get back late Saturday night. High School Christmas Party

This Sunday, December 18th, join us for our annual youth group Christmas Party! Come at 6:00 to the High School Room (#304 in Family Life Center) for a gift exchange. For this bring a wrapped gift (don't spend more than $5). It doesn't need to be for anyone in particular, we'll pile all the presents in the middle of the room, draw numbers, and have some fun opening and "borrowing" gifts from each other.

There will also be a Christmas Outfit Contest with prizes for the top 3 places. So wear an awesome Christmas sweater or Santa outfit!

At 7:00, we'll head to the Ice Skating Rink at City Park. We have the rink reserved until 9:00. You will need $2 to rent skates.

Parents, if you are picking up your son or daughter, please plan to do so from the skating rink. Thanks!

High School Girls Retreat 2011

Calling all high school girls! Join us as we head to Kansas City, December 9-10, for a weekend of great fun, yummy food and learning more about purity of the heart. Your adult leaders are excited to pour into you this weekend as we talk about issues such as beauty, self-image, making healthy choices and more. We pray that this is a weekend that challenges your heart, mind and hands in deeper relationship with Christ.

Cost: $60 plus money for 2 fast food meals (let us know if money is an issue --we can help!) To reserve your spot, turn in your $60 to Josh or Amy by November 27th. After that date, it’s very possible that we won’t be able to get enough hotel rooms if you sign up late!

We’ll leave Manhattan as soon as possible on Friday evening (let me know if you have a conflict that would keep you from leaving until a specific time). We would return in the late afternoon/early evening on Saturday. We’ll give you more specific information when we get closer to the event.

Oasis

Oasis is the Midwest's largest student conference! Over 1,000 high school and middle school students will descend upon Manhattan on November 4-6 for Oasis! The cost is $35/person. Register by Oct 9 to avoid $10 late fee. (Checks should be made out to UCC w/ "Oasis" in memo line.)

This year's worship will be led once again by the Jordan Howerton Band. Our speaker will be Anthony Inchaustegui from Los Angeles, CA (via Mexico!). There will also be a special appearance by painter Eric Samuel Timm, whom many of you saw at Believe Conference.

We will once again be staying in families' homes around town and enjoying long-held youth ministry traditions (can you say sand football?!!).

To register, your money must be turned in to Josh or Craig. All students attending will need to fill out and turn in an Oasis Registration Form and have a UCC Medical Release Form on file. For more information about the weekend, check out www.oasisconference.org.

On Sunday, September 18th from 6:00-8:30pm, join the youth ministries of Faith E-Free Church and University Christian Church as together we welcome Mr. Brown to discuss choices that affect relationships, especially in the area of SEX!

Parents & high schoolers are invited to attend TOGETHER! There will be a games, a session where parents & students are together, food, and then break-out sessions for youth & parents separately.

CIY:Move 2011

Solid Rock Youth Ministry invites you to attend our annual trip to CIY:Move, Christ In Youth’s summer conference, July 3-9, 2011. We’ll be heading to the new destination of Hope College in Holland, Michigan, near the coast of Lake Michigan, where we’ll spend a week learning, having fun, worshipping, & bonding. This is one of the best events we do all year!

This year’s theme is Something Bigger and is all about what happens when normal people jump into God’s radical plans. It will showcase the story of God’s hope for us all. Have more questions? Check out www.ciy.com/move for more details.

Who Can Attend?
Any high school students are welcome to attend (those who will be going into 9th grade next fall through 2011 graduates). So invite your friends!

How Do I Register?
To register and reserve your spot on this trip, turn in a non-refundable $50 deposit along with the form on the CIY:Move 2011 Flyer (download the form here!) by the dates below. This deposit will go toward the total cost of the trip for you. The remainder of the balance will be due by June 19th if registered early.

HSYG: MCC OnCampus

For High School Youth Group this Sunday, May 1st from 4:00-7:00pm, we have been invited to Manhattan Christian College's campus for a special event! "On Campus" will include free food, large group games with MCC Camp Teams and students, and a worship service. There should be multiple youth groups there and we'll get a change to get a taste of MCC and be encouraged to live for Christ.

If you need a ride, meet at UCC's lower parking lot at 3:30 p.m. Otherwise meet at MCC! See you Sunday!

We’re excited to announce that for our 2011 spring break mission trip (March 20-25) we’ll be heading to Dallas, TX. Dallas is a city that is often overlooked when it comes to missions opportunities. There will be great chances for us to serve the poor, homeless, and minority communities.

What are we going to do? - Some of the projects we may get to be a part of are:

We're taking a journey to the great city of Wichita, KS for a two day retreat to "See What God Has Done." We'll be staying at Countryside Christian Church, visiting the Exploration Place, and taking in an afternoon newly-released movie, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

Hey everybody! It's that time of year again... and no I am not referring to Christmas. Although soon you will be seeing santas and snowflakes in stores and hearing Christmas music on the radio...
But the time IS here for Oasis 2010! Oasis is a youth conference taking place right here in Manhattan, where students from all over the midwest will be joining for a fantastic weekend of fellowship, worship, and encouragement in our Christian journeys. The Conference will begin on Friday, November 12th and end on Sunday November 14th. There will be an engaging and talented worship band (The Jordan Howerton Band) as well as a dynamic and challenging speaker (Luke Wright). The cost for the conference is $30 if you sign up and pay by October 27th, or $35 if you sign up late. We will be staying with a few families from the church, so the only extra costs that are necessary are 2 fast food meals. Messy Olympics: High School Fall Kickoff

It's that time of year again: school has started, the weather is beginning to cool off, fall sports are rolling, and the high school ministry is hosting its annual fall kickoff. On Sunday, September 12th from 3:30-5:30 come to UCC's Family Life Center and back parking lot to enjoy an afternoon with a plethora of messy games. Wear clothes that can be ruined and plan to get sloppy! There will be prizes, giveaways, food, fun, and hanging out with your friends. Bring an old towel & a change of clothes to join our church's hog roast potluck dinner at 6:00. All high school students are welcome so invite your friends!

Worlds of Fun, July 14

Middle & high school trip to Worlds of Fun on Wednesday July 14th. We'll leave at 9:00am and get back to Manhattan about 9:00pm. Hang with us for a day of roller coasters, bumper cars, and tilt-a-whirls. Get wet on the Viking Voyager log ride or the Monsoon. Experience thrills on the Mamba, the Prowler (the new wooden roller coaster), and, my favorite, the Patriot! A great outreach event to invite your non-Christian friends to. Cost = $25 (which is $17 cheaper than the price you'd pay regularly). You will also need money for 2 fast food meals and any snacks or merchandise you want to purchase. UCC Hires Middle School Minister

I am excited to follow up our announcement from weekend services that UCC has hired Craig Patrick to be our full-time Middle School Minister!

Craig is a graduate of Manhattan Christian College and worked with our youth ministry while living here in Manhattan. He began as a volunteer in the spring of 2005 and was our youth ministry intern that summer. He continued as a volunteer for the next two-and-a-half years, again serving as summer intern in 2007. That September he took the step into full-time ministry. Since then, he has been the minister of youth, college, and worship at Berea Christian Church in Hampton, Georgia.

Craig is excited to move back to Manhattan, feeling "the pull" to come back. He is from Rose Hill, KS, and will, thus, be moving back closer to family and friends. Many of our students who had connected with Craig during his previous time with us are thrilled for his return.

I am also excited to once again work with Craig, now in a peer-to-peer role. I am excited to have the privilege to work as a team to reach out to students who don't have relationships with Jesus and to those who are working on theirs. May God continue to bless the ministry of University Christian Church.

CIY:Move

We’ll be heading to the new destination of Durango, Colorado, where we’ll spend a week learning, having fun, worshipping, & bonding. Any high school students are welcome to attend (those who will be going into 9th grade next fall through 2010 graduates). This year’s theme is Move: No Matter What and is a challenge for tens of thousands of high school students to live for the sake of the Gospel. What would happen if we invited our non-Christian friends and shared with them this life-changing experience? Have more questions? Check out www.ciy.com/move for more details.

Costs
In order to receive a lower price you must help with the fundraisers we'll be doing. The following are the prices if you help with fundraisers:
    - If you register by May 16, the cost is $175.
    - If you register by June 14, the cost is $210.
    - If you register after June 14, the cost is $235.

If you do not help with fundraisers, add $150 to each of the above prices. Fundraisers will take place during the spring and summer and will be announced at a future date. You will be required to work a certain amount in order to receive the lower rate for the trip. If you don’t work all the fundraisers you may be required to pay more for the trip.

King-Solomon Christian Camp

Each summer we take our students to King-Solomon Christian Camp just west of Abilene. King-Solomon has impacted many lives for the kingdom, including mine. I grew up a student at this camp, made decisions to rededicate my life to Christ, moved into a staff position, and even pursued ministry due partially to my experiences at King-Solomon. Several other students I have had the privilege of knowing from camp have gone on to Bible college and are currently serving in ministry in churches across the nation, some of them from right here at UCC. There are even a handful of former "camp kids" who are now youth ministers at nearby churches and are involved in the leadership of camp.

This summer's theme is "Reflect." We'll look at what it means to reflect Jesus in our everyday lives. Easier said than done!

Here are the dates that our youth ministry will be attending:

- HS Camp: June 7-11

- MS Camp: June 20-25

The total cost is $150 but all members & regular attenders receive a scholarship where the church pays half! That means you pay only $75 for a week of camp! Try finding that deal anywhere else!

The early registration deadline is May 2nd (that’s this Sunday!). After Sunday, a late fee of $30 is added to the cost (UCC will not pay ½ of the late fee).
